Complete guide to permanent laser hair removal

Permanent laser hair removal is one of the most popular treatments in aesthetics. And for good reason: it's the only proven way to reduce hair permanently, without the discomfort of waxing, threading or shaving. Here's everything you need to know before starting.

How does laser hair removal work?

The laser emits a beam of light that's absorbed by the hair's melanin (its pigment). That energy turns into heat that travels to the follicle and destroys it, leaving the surrounding skin intact. Only follicles in the active growth phase (anagen) are destroyed — that's why you need several sessions.

What technology do we use at Almaluna?

At Almaluna we use the latest generation diode laser, considered the gold standard for hair removal. Its advantages:

  • Safe for all skin phototypes, including tanned and darker skin
  • Integrated cooling system that minimizes discomfort
  • Large head for faster sessions on large areas
  • Specific medical protocols per body zone

How many sessions do I need?

Each hair goes through 3 phases (anagen, catagen, telogen) and is only vulnerable to the laser during the first. That's why several spaced sessions are required to "catch" all follicles in their active phase.

  • 6 to 8 sessions is the average for most areas
  • Every 4-8 weeks depending on body zone
  • Optional annual maintenance after the complete treatment

Some areas (like underarms) respond faster. Others (like arms or legs on women with fine hair) may require more sessions.

Is it painful?

The sensation is described as a "quick pinch" or "snap of a rubber band". With our integrated cooling system, most patients tolerate it very well. In more sensitive areas (groin, underarms, lip) it may be a bit more uncomfortable, but always tolerable.

Preparation before each session

  1. Shave the area 24 hours before with a clean razor. DO NOT wax, thread or tweeze for at least 4 weeks before
  2. Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks prior
  3. Don't use self-tanners 1 week before
  4. Arrive without creams, perfumes or deodorant on the area

Aftercare

  • Intense hydration with soothing creams (fragrance-free)
  • SPF 50+ mandatory if the area is exposed to sun
  • Avoid pool, sauna and intense exercise for 24-48h
  • Do not exfoliate the area for a week
  • Some hairs will continue falling out during the following 2 weeks

Who CANNOT have laser hair removal?

It's contraindicated in:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Recently tanned or sunburned skin
  • White or very blonde hair (not enough melanin)
  • Some photosensitive medications (consult your doctor)
  • Tattoos in the area (we must work around them)

Men or women?

We serve men and women equally. In men, the most requested areas are beard/neck, back, chest and abdomen. In women: underarms, groin, full legs, upper lip and chin.

When to start?

The best time is fall-winter in countries with seasons, or any time in tropical climates like Medellín, as long as you avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area. If you have a wedding or beach trip in mind, start at least 4-6 months in advance.
